Speaking at the Royal Welsh Show, Welsh Liberal Democrat Cabinet Secretary for Education has highlighted the transformative changes taking place to rural education and hailed the Welsh Liberal Democrats’ proud record of standing up for rural communities.
In government Kirsty has introduced a rural schools strategy, including a £2.5m per year grant for rural and small schools, a presumption against closure for rural schools and for the first time ever, a definition of a rural school.
Kirsty has also created a £5m fund to give all schools access to super-fast broadband.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Cabinet Secretary for Education Kirsty Williams commented:
Having represented this beautiful area for almost 20 years in the Assembly, one of my proudest achievements as Cabinet Secretary for Education has been developing Wales’ first ever rural schools strategy.
Schools are the backbone of their rural communities. In government the Welsh Liberal Democrats are supporting rural schools to ensure all pupils can reach their potential.
Our rural schools strategy will play a key role in fulfilling our national mission of raising standards, reducing the attainment gap and creating an education system that is a source of national pride and public confidence.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds added:
It is no accident that these transformative changes to rural education in Wales are happening under a Welsh Liberal Democrat Cabinet Secretary for Education in Kirsty Williams. Rural communities are in the DNA of our party and only we can be trusted to understand and deliver for rural communities across Wales.
