“Lame duck First Minister, Carwyn Jones, has come under fire after admitting that he can no longer command the support he needs to maintain an official Welsh Government position on Brexit.
The Welsh Government’s longstanding policy on Brexit has long been to ‘accept the result’ of the 2016 EU referendum, whilst arguing for a deal that secures unrestricted access to the Customs Union and Single Market.
However, in First Minister’s Questions today, Carwyn Jones refused to rule out a second referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union – with the First Minister admitting that they “don’t have a position as a government.
It comes after two Cabinet Secretaries last week penned a letter calling for a second referendum, despite repeated assurances from the First Minister that his government respects and accepts the referendum result.
Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, described the situation as “chaotic and warned that the current “state of paralysis will continue for as long as this lame duck First Minister is in post.
“There is an atmosphere of chaos at the heart of Welsh Government, with ministers openly flouting collective responsibility, and a First Minister who can no longer command the respect of his colleagues.
“It’s as though school is out for summer, and senior Labour back-benchers will be wondering why certain colleagues in government are given free reign – when the whip hand has been deployed for considerably less in the past.
“It also begs the question, just where does the Welsh Government stand on Brexit now, with our departure from the EU just months away?
“Frankly, the moment Carwyn announced his intention to stand down his authority drained away, but the question is how long this situation is allowed to continue.
“Let’s be clear: this state of paralysis will continue for as long this lame duck First Minister remains in post.
