A Government in collapse, a Parliament in paralysis and a constitution in chaos

Hywel Williams MP, Plaid Cymru’s Brexit spokesperson, has said the chaos in Westminster reaffirms that it is people not politicians that must decide what happens next in relation to Brexit.

The Westminster Government today failed to block an amendment to the schedule of the ‘Meaningful Vote’ on the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal. The amendment forces a vote on different options to the Prime Minister’s deal within three days of the Meaningful Vote, if the deal fails to get a majority in Parliament. Alternatives that could be voted on include a People’s Vote, with the option to remain in the European Union.

All four Plaid Cymru MPs voted in favour of the amendment, which was tabled by Conservative rebel, Dominic Grieve MP.

Plaid Cymru MPs also helped secure a narrow victory over the Government on Tuesday night. The successful amendment to the Finance Bill restricts the Westminster Government’s ability to deliver a ‘no deal’ Brexit. Tuesday’s Government defeat is a clear indication that there is a majority in Parliament that would vote to block a ‘no deal’ Brexit.

Hywel Williams MP, Plaid Cymru’s Brexit Spokesperson, said:

“The Westminster Government has now been forced to speed up the Parliamentary process so they can’t run down the clock to create a false choice between their woeful Brexit deal and no deal.

“This is a Government in collapse, a Parliament in paralysis and a constitution in chaos. Westminster must now get on with its job and works towards a solution to this Brexit mess.

“No Deal is simply not an option and as recent votes in Parliament have shown, MPs would not let it happen.

“Westminster is always a farce, but in the last few weeks it has reached new levels of ridiculous. The Government attempts to block or delay any votes it thinks it will lose and when a vote does come, they lose them anyway.

“Fundamentally it shows Westminster cannot be trusted with decisions about our European future. The only option is a People’s Vote so that a final say can be had on the matter, now that we know the facts.”
