Following the warning from Airbus it could quit the UK if the UK exits the Single Market and Customs Union without a transition deal, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have urged the UK Government to heed Airbus’ warning and keep the UK in the Single Market and Customs Union as a minimum.
Airbus employs over 6,000 workers in Broughton and supports an estimated 11,600 jobs in its supply chain.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds commented:
The loss of Airbus would be devastating to the Welsh economy, nowhere more so then Flintshire. Airbus provide exactly the kind of high-skilled manufacturing jobs Wales needs to succeed. If Airbus goes, those jobs will go to the EU and they’ll take our skilled workforce with them.
The UK Government must heed the warnings of Airbus and at a minimum the UK Government must keep the UK in the Single Market and Customs Union.
Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable said:
The damage Brexit will do to the Welsh economy is becoming increasingly clear. Brexit will lead to huge delays at Welsh ports, cut our farmers off from the export markets they rely on and threaten key employers like Airbus.
The Liberal Democrats will continue to fight to give the people the final say and the opportunity to choose an exit from Brexit.
Liberal Democrat Lords Spokesperson for Wales Baroness Humphreys added:
This warning from Airbus is further vindication of the work the Welsh Liberal Democrats have been doing in the House of Lords to oppose the EU Withdrawal Bill and fight the hard Brexit supported by the Conservatives and Labour.
