Following Leanne Wood’s endorsement of a referendum on the final Brexit deal during her appearance on Question Time last week, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds has written to Leanne Wood, Plaid Cymru AMs and MPs urging clarity on their Brexit position.
Giving the people the final say on Brexit and the opportunity to choose an Exit from Brexit has been a longstanding Welsh Liberal Democrat policy, a policy that Leanne Wood and Plaid Cymru have previously criticised.
It’s not clear whether a referendum on the final Brexit deal is Plaid Cymru party policy given their previous criticism of the policy, the fact many of their MPs and AMs didn’t support the People’s Vote campaign and the Brexit Q&A page on Plaid Cymru’s website which specifically opposes a “second referendum on EU membership.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds commented:
I welcome Leanne Wood’s backing last week for the longstanding Welsh Liberal Democrat policy of giving the people the final say on Brexit and the opportunity to choose an Exit from Brexit.
It’s far from clear whether supporting a referendum on the final Brexit deal is Plaid Cymru policy or simply Leanne Wood’s personal view. We urge Plaid Cymru to urgently clarify their position on Brexit to put an end to any confusion. There must be no ambiguity on Plaid’s position on this, the most important issue of our generation.
If Plaid do now support a referendum on the final Brexit deal, will they concede that we were right to call for the people to be given the final say on Brexit during last year’s snap general election? And do they accept that their criticisms of the policy at the time were wrong?
