Ivan Moult’s debut album ‘Second Guessing’ was ambitious and sometimes epic in scale whereas ‘Longest Shadow’ is much more intimate and restrained exploring the theme of love; found, embraced and lost. The album features some superb and sympathetic string arrangements from Callum Duggan and these work to great effect on the opening songs such as “Longest Shadow” and “Like Millions Before”. As the album progresses these dissipate leading to some beautiful and impactful moments including the reflective “Easily Gone” and “Any Other Name”. One of the album’s highlights is the closing “Fool on the Floor”. As a sign off it has a strong sense of self awareness and a wry twist of self-deprecating humour. It is masterful song writing.
“I ain’t no bad boy I’m just, I’m just another fool on your floor
A fool on your floor and I’m on the dance floor”.
‘Longest Shadow’ is a superb album of exquisite songs that explore one man’s journey of reflection and regret.
